Thuram questions Les Bleus career

By Patrick Haond
French defender Lilian Thuram says that he could retire from international football at any time, but has no plans to quit Les Bleus just yet.

The Juventus stopper will win his 94th cap for his country on Saturday in a friendly against Germany, but says he could call it a day at anytime.

He says that reaching his century of caps is not an issue, and that he will end his international career as soon as he stops enjoying it.

"When I am tired, I won't be here anymore," said Thuram.

"As long as I have fun in this team, and they call on me, I will have no reason to stop playing for the French team.

"But I could stop any day.

"100 caps is not an aim, I was lucky to be part of a good group. So, Euro 2004 is an important aim."

Thuram says that their qualifying group for Euro 2004 was not the strongest, and a few friendlies against quality opposition will give them a better idea of how good the current French side are.

"When I knew the qualification group, for the first time in my career, I told myself: 'If we can't qualify, it is a really serious problem'.

"Considering the proposed teams, we couldn't have a true estimation of the French team's strengths and weaknesses. Against good teams, but not great teams, the French team did what it had to do.

"Potentially, we have a very good team, and some friendly matches could give a more precise idea about our value."
