Smith arrested over incident
According to West Yorkshire Police, the 23-year-old was questioned and later released on bail after being caught on tape throwing a bottle that had landed on the Elland Road pitch in the dying stages of the match.
The bottle was alleged to have hit a female fan in the crowd and police at the scene promptly took statements following the incident.
Smith apologised for throwing the bottle into the crowd but police have decided there was enough evidence to arrest the forward.
"A 23-year-old man was arrested by officers from City and Holbeck in Leeds today (Thursday) and questioned in relation to an alleged incident at the Leeds United versus Manchester United fixture on October 28," A police spokeswoman said.
"He was questioned and released on police bail to return to a police station at a later date.
"A file will be sent to the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) for consideration."
The news comes just hours after Smith had earned a call-up to Sven Goran Eriksson's England squad for the friendly versus Denmark at Old Trafford on Sunday.
