Notman forced to retire

Norwich City striker Alex Notman has been forced to retire after suffering a freak injury back in 2002.

The Scot tried to block a venomous free kick by Mark Venus during the East Anglian derby with Ipswich Town.

Initially, it looked like the sort of problem that raises laughs within football stadiums as he had bravely charged down the shot, but Notman sustained a serious ankle injury.

The 23-year-old, who cost £250,000 from Manchester United, has made only one appearance since.

"I have loved my time at Norwich," he told City's official website.

"It is a great club with a great manager and great players.

"I came from a family club in Manchester United and I was lucky enough to come to another family club in Norwich.

"I will miss all the lads and the manager and will follow the club's fortunes in the future as a keen supporter."
