Rool makes peace

By Patrick Haond
Lens' hard-man defender Cyril Rool has put his disciplinary problems behind him and is looking forward to a sustained run in the side.

Rool fell out with Lens coach Joel Muller and club officials after a recent sending off against Bordeaux. The incident incensed the Lens management team and Rool was left out of the starting line-up for the league clash with Paris Saint Germain.

Rool, formerly of Bastia, responded by hurling a diatribe at Muller which resulted in the full back being sidelined for a further two matches.

Despite being sceptical about his own guilt in the episode, Rool is keen to the put the incident behind him.

"Even if I don't agree, they were right to discipline me," he said. "I can't stand back when I am harshly treated. I am too impulsive.

"Everywhere I played I was a first team member because I was good on the pitch and not because the coaches were afraid of me. I am not a lout."

However, whether Rool's long term future will be at Lens remains a subject of speculation. The full back was linked to Portsmouth, Southampton and Benfica in the summer and is reluctant to rule out a move abroad.

Speaking to L'Equipe, Rool admitted he could be tempted away from France.

"The chairman's statements have always been important to me. If tomorrow he tells me he doesn't want me, I will leave. I would like to know what the club wants. About my future, we will see. But those last events won't change anything."

Former Marseille man Rool confessed he feels like a marked man in French football and a move abroad seems increasingly likely.

"I think people put a label on my back, especially the referees. So that is why I would like to discover a foreign country. I have played for a lot of clubs all over France for 10 years and now I would like to have fun."
