Emerson dropped by Brazil

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says he is dropping heavily-criticised captain Emerson for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.

The Roma star, who has often been criticised when representing his country, will be replaced in the midfield engine room by 24-year-old Renato.

"It's a technical and tactical change," Parreira revealed after a training session.

"Playing at home, we have to go after the three points. Renato has played several matches and he's no longer a newcomer."

Brazil currently have seven points from three games, one more than Uruguay and the world champions were heavily criticised for Sunday's 1-1 draw with Peru for a lacklustre display in midfield.

Emerson has started all of Brazil's previous qualifiers but has subsequently been replaced by Renato in every game.
