Gills wanted Premiership King bid

Nottingham Forest's newest signing Marlon King has revealed Gillingham wanted a Premiership side to bid for him in the January transfer window.

The City Ground side paid nearly a £1 million for the 23-year-old's services, a fee that has helped enable to club to pay players' wages and bonuses.

King always wanted to join Forest, but had to wait an extra month as Gillingham tried to hold out for the best price possible for the striker.

"Forest had offered more money a month ago, but Gillingham wanted to hold out until January for a Premiership club to come in," explained King.

"Their financial situation got a lot worse and because Forest's offer was paid out in one big lump sum up front that helped the players get paid.

"My transfer has got them all their wages and bonuses so it has helped them and helped me because I've signed for the club I wanted to come to in the first place."
