Beckenbauer blasts Bayern

By Thomas Zeh
Franz Beckenbauer has launched an outspoken attack on the current Bayern Munich squad, after a fortunate 1-0 home victory over Anderlecht.

Despite ensuring qualification to the UEFA Champions League knock-out stages, Beckenbauer was unimpressed with the nature of Bayern's victory.

The German legend said: ''Thanks to good luck and Oliver Kahn in goal, we qualified to the next round.

''It was extremely important to win, but I am not satisfied by the way we played.''

The German champions, who have endured an inconsistent campaign this year, had to rely on a dubious penalty to ensure victory against their Belgian opposition.

Munich never really looked like increasing their lead and Anderlecht were unfortunate not to equalize, as young striker Aruna Dindane squandered three excellent chances.

Beckenbauer has been a major critic of Bayern this season and his latest words will not go unnoticed at the Olympiastadion.

''It was a very gracious decision to award us the penalty and I believe that not many referees blow their whistle in similar circumstances,'' admitted Beckenbauer.

''We didn't play football in the second half, as the whole team pulled behind the ball and allowed Anderlecht to dominate.

''In such an important game, where our survival in the UEFA Champions League was at stake, we only stood around and were always too slow.''
