Campbell vows to help Rooney

Campbell believes there is too much expectation on Rooney at such a young age and he wants to help lift some of the burden.

England captain David Beckham has already made it clear he would be willing to help out his England team-mate and now Campbell is determined to ease the pressure on the 18-year-old.

"Wayne still needs protecting, without a doubt,'' said Campbell.

"I think people have to realise that this is really Wayne's first season.

"Last season he played a bit-part and he did really well coming in and playing certain games.

"But this is his first real season where the scrutiny has been on him because he made such an impact last season.

"So we can't get too carried away. I'd like him to just keep doing what he has been doing, keep playing his football, he's young and he's learning, leave it at that."
