Nedved set for Golden Ball

Speculation from France is suggesting that Juventus midfielder Pavel Nedved is set to win the Ballon d'Or.

The gifted Czech midfielder has become a firm favourite for the award, with major competition coming from Thierry Henry, Raul and Paolo Maldini.

Nedved has admitted that he would be delighted to land the honour, but is remaining tight-lipped about his chances.

He said: ''Let's wait for the definitive standing.

''Sure, I'd like to win it, because it would be a great thing to become only the second Czech Republic player to win the award.''

Nedved has enjoyed consistently superb form since joining Juventus from Lazio and the Czech playmaker is keen to underline how collective team success takes precedence over any individual accolades.

''As I have always said, I'm more interested in the team's success,'' he added.

One potential stumbling block regarding Nedved's bid for the Golden Ball is that he has not won the UEFA Champions League, although a Scudetto and Italian Supercup should work in his favour.

Nedved missed Juventus' defeat to Milan in last season's Champions League final through suspension, after playing an integral role in guiding the Turin club through the competition's latter stages.
