Van Kerckhoven considers future
Belgian international Nico Van Kerckhoven is considering a return home as Schalke have so far failed to extend his contract which ends next summer.
Van Kerckhoven joined the Royal Blues in 1998 from Lierse SK, but his career has lately suffered from serious knee problems which cost the 33-year-old his starting place in Jupp Heynckes line-up.
The midfield star now admits he is unsure about his future and that maybe it is the best time to return to Belgium
"Maybe it's the right time to return to Belgium," said Van Kerckhoven.
"To me Schalke is the best club and the past six years were a great time. Maybe they still need me or maybe it's the right time to return to Belgium," he told Kicker.
Schalke's managing director Rudi Assauer had lately stressed that the club face a massive squad overhaul and hinted that several players such as Van Kerckhoven and Polish duo Tomasz Waldoch and Tomasz Hajto are expected to leave the ArenaAufSchalke next summer.
