Leon brace seals derby win
A brace by debutant Leon McKenzie gave Nigel Worthington's side all three points in sunny noon-hour conditions at Portman Road, as The Canaries take the first bragging rights of the season over their East Anglian rivals.
The away side started McKenzie with fellow debutant Mathias Svensson in their frontline, as both sides showed eagerness to press forward in the early stages.
Norwich went close to breaking the deadlock first but Paul McVeigh's close-range chip after being played in from the left sailed over goalkeeper Kelvin Davis's bar.
However, the visitors would make all-important breakthrough eight minutes before half time, as Phil Mulryne's free kick from the left-hand side found its way to the far post.
Following a couple of poor attempts by Ipswich to clear the bouncing ball in the box, the chance dropped for McKenzie to strike right footed and give Norwich a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half saw more pressure from Worthington's side and McVeigh was unlucky not to double the Norfolk club's lead with a shot that rolled across the face of the Ipswich goal.
Ipswich's forward endeavours were led through striker Darren Bent but he was to have a frustrating day in front of the Norwich goal - having been denied at one stage with a fine double save from Robert Green before Jim Magilton's weak header found the arms of the keeper.
The match soon ended as a contest as McKenzie scored his second goal with a fine header from a Gary Holt cross on the right that beat Davis at the far post for 2-0.
Another fine save by Green from an Alan Mahon free kick capped a perfect day for The Canaries, as the result took Norwich top of the table by a point over West Bromwich Albion while Ipswich stay in the play-off positions in fifth place.
