Mahon ends Ipswich loan

Blackburn Rovers have recalled midfielder Alan Mahon from his loan spell with First Division high-flyers Ipswich Town.

He will return to Graeme Souness's side and is expected to go into the Rovers squad for their Boxing Day clash at home to Middlesbrough.

The Republic of Ireland international had two weeks left on his three-month loan spell at Portman Road and Town boss Joe Royle was keen to sign Mahon to a permanent deal.

However, Souness has decided that he needs the Irishman at Ewood Park over the holiday fixture period - much to the disappointment of Royle.

"We thought Alan would be here for the length of his loan but Blackburn want him back and there is nothing we can do about it," Joe told the club's official website.

"Blackburn have injury problems and Graeme Souness is short of left-sided players so they have recalled Alan and he will go straight into their squad for Friday.

"It has been well documented that we would like to bring Alan here on a permanent deal but that has always been dependant on the financial arrangements.

"I would like to thank Alan for his efforts since he has been at the club. He has proved very popular with the players and the supporters in his time here."

Mahon made 12 appearances in his temporary stay at Portman Road, scoring just one goal.
