Red Devils land Wenzel

By Chris Ives
VfB Stuttgart defender Timo Wenzel has joined Bundesliga rivals Kaiserslautern.

The 26-year-old centre half put pen to paper on a deal keeping him at the Betzenberg Stadion until 2006 on Thursday.

Wenzel decided to leave die Schwaben after failing to command a first-team place ahead of coach Felix Magath's favoured duo of Marcelo Bordon and Fernando Meira.

"I've shown that I'm a good player in Stuttgart," Wenzel said.

"But Marcelo Bordon, one of the best defenders in the world is coming back from injury there.

"I want to help FCK and I'm sure I can."

The news of Wenzel's signing will come as a relief to Lautern coach Erik Gerets (pictured) who will have to fare without Africa Cup-bound Lucien Mettomo and Bill Tchato when the Bundesliga restarts at the end of the month.

"A German-speaking player will be of immense importance as far as communication within our defence is concerned," Gerets commented.

No financial details of the move have been revealed by either club.
