Berkovic seals Pompey switch

Portsmouth have completed the signing of Israeli international midfielder Eyal Berkovic from Manchester City.

The two clubs agreed a fee on Wednesday and the deal was completed late on Thursday evening after he passed a medical.

The 31-year-old has inked a two-and-half year deal on the South Coast and Pompey have confirmed that he is eligible to make his debut in Saturday's clash against City at Fratton Park.

Manager Harry Redknapp has been chasing Berkovic for the past 12 months, but he has finally landed the playmaker he had under him at West Ham United.

Berkovic will be unveiled by Pompey on Friday, before he joins his new team-mates for his first training session.

The former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic star has left The City of Manchester Stadium after playing over 60 games for The Citizens and scoring nine goals.

Meanwhile, now Berkovic is signed - Redknapp could turn his attention elsewhere in his squad, with a striker a priority.

Pompey are being linked with Arsenal's Francis Jeffers - currently on loan at Everton.

Portsmouth could lose current Jason Roberts, who is on loan at Fratton Park from West Bromwich Albion but they are considering a bid for him from Wigan Athletic.

If Redknapp does lose Roberts, then that will free up another possible loan for a Premiership player - as you can only have two and Alexei Smertin is also with them on a temporary basis from Chelsea.

Jeffers is currently struggling to make an impact at his former club and could be allowed to move south.

Portsmouth's attacking options will be weakend further in the next few weeks when Nigerian star Yakubu Aiyegbeni flys out for the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
