Perugia anger over 'penalty'
Perugia's English striker Jay Bothroyd captured a few headlines on Sunday after failing to win a penalty in the 1-0 loss to Roma.
Roma secured a 1-0 win which keeps them top of Serie A, but the scoreline could have been different had Bothroyd tumbled in the area under a challenge.
Television replays captured Bothroyd being clearly fouled in the box by Traianos Dellas, but the forward attempted to play on and the chance was lost.
Rather than take the play back and award the penalty, referee Daniele Tombolini opted to play on - much to Perugia's disgust.
Bothroyd was initially chastised by his coach, Serse Cosmi, who said: "He has to be applauded for not diving, but if you are touched in the area it is right that he should have gone down. If you don't, you are not a full player."
After taking stock of the situation, Perugia president Luciano Gaucci opted to focus his anger on the referee, claiming the decision reinforces his belief that the club are being targeted by officials.
He said: "Denying such an obvious penalty is the confirmation of what I have been saying for some time.
"The football authorities want Perugia to pay for what happened in the summer," Gaucci said in reference to his battle to keep Catania in Serie B.
"We arrived today having lost 12 points from decisions made against us," added Gaucci. "They are trying everything to send us down to Serie B."
