Tykes confirm Cureton talks

The former Bristol Rovers hit-man has been looking for new pastures since leaving South Korean club Busan Icons in November.

The ex-Norwich City trainee had an unsuccessful trial with First Division side Sunderland this month and his agent has started talks with The Tykes over a possible move to Oakwell.

Thordarson admitted to being unsure how far talks will progress with Cureton's agent, though a deal is still possible.

"The deal for Jamie Cureton is not dead at the moment," Thordarson told the club's official website.

"We have been in touch with his agent but cannot tell at this moment in time.

"There are other options there at the moment and we must find the best one for Barnsley Football Club."

Another striker that is interesting the former Stoke City manager is transfer-listed Potters hit-man Chris Iwelumo.

"We have also kept up our interest in Chris Iwelumo," added Thordarson.

"He is one of the players that we have discussed.

"That is not dead and we have to wait and see again on that one."

One player that will be leaving the South Yorkshire outfit is goalkeeper Sasa Ilic.

His monthly contract with The Tykes will not be renewed once it expires on February 7.

The former Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth keeper has not settled at Oakwell and the club have decided to let him go and look for a permanent replacement during the transfer window.

In the meantime, Thordarson has brought in Newcastle United custodian Tony Caig on a month's loan.
