City snap up Arason

Manchester City have snapped up Iceland international Arni Gautur Arason on a short term deal after the goalkeeper impressed on trial.

The 28-year-old former Rosenborg star is a free agent and has done enough to earn a contract with the Premiership club.

Arason will be a reserve to England number one David James, who has also joined the club this week, and will compete with Kevin Ellegaard for a place on the bench.

The Icelandic star will be available for City's match against Blackburn at the weekend, but manager Kevin Keegan has already insisted that it is too soon for the player to be included.

"I don't think it is realistic for him to come into consideration for the game against Blackburn," said Keegan.

"He has not played for six or seven weeks."

Arason was delighted to have won a move to England and hopes he can do enough to win a longer contract.

"I will use the time to further take care of the chances I get. City was in a rush, but I didn't have to think long to make my mind up," Arason told Adresseavisen.

With new City goalkeeper David James unable to play in the FA Cup after playing in the competition for West Ham United, Arason hopes to get his chance in the fourth round clash against Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.

"I have been told that I'm the club's second choice in goal, the game against Tottenham next weekend will I therefore be topical.

"I'm excited and very glad that this is sorted out."
