Gabbiadini hangs up his boots

Much-travelled Hartlepool striker Marco Gabbiadini has retired from professional football after being advised by medical experts to call time on his illustrious career.

The hit-man, who turns 36 on Tuesday, was on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his right knee back in November in a bid to clean out the joint.

But after suffering pain in his knee, he was advised to call time on his illustrious 18-year career in football in which he scored 273 times from 791 games.

Gabbiadini began as an apprentice with York, before playing for Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Derby, Birmingham, Oxford, Stoke, Darlington, Northampton and finally Hartlepool.

The veteran had seven goals to his name this term, as Hartlepool began life in Division Two, from 15 league appearances and one start in both the FA and Carling Cup.
