Arsenal 4 Middlesbrough 1

Holders Arsenal booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 victory over Middlesbrough at Highbury.

The result was harsh on Boro, but again a poor second half display saw them beaten by the same scoreline from The Premiership clash just two weeks ago.

Arsenal's finishing was excellent as Dennis Bergkamp, Freddie Ljungberg (twice) and David Bentley all converted their chances with great aplomb.

Boro actually levelled Bergkamp's opener with a good finish from Job, but they could not repeat the feat and their day was compounded later on when George Boateng received his marching orders for two very harsh bookings.

Both sides made a number of changes from the teams that met in the Carling Cup in midweek, with Arsenal bringing back the likes of Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, Sol Campbell and Bergkamp - and it was the Dutch maestro who opened the scoring.

A long ball down the right saw Stuart Parnaby attempt to shield the ball out of play, but Ray Parlour hooked the ball back into the area, it dropped for Bergkamp on the edge of the area and he stroked the ball home past Mark Schwarzer - albeit after a deflection off Chris Riggott.

Boro were back level within five minutes when Job latched onto Michael Ricketts's knockdown and he turned Kolo Toure with ease before blasting high past Jens Lehmann.

The Teessiders deserved their leveller, but they could not hang on as Arsenal went back ahead. Campbell created the chance as he headed back across goal, Ljungberg picked the ball up and turned George Boateng on the edge of the six-yard box before firing the ball under Franck Queudrue and through the legs of Schwarzer.

Boro could have levelled matters before the interval and Stewart Downing had a good chance, but it was a different story after the break.

Neither side started the second half but it was not too long before Arsenal extended their lead, but Boro will have questioned their defending when an unmarked Ljungberg headed home Pires's corner without even leaving the ground on 68 minutes.

Boro knew they were beaten and barely pushed forward after this, although Gaizka Mendieta's snap-shot almost caught Lehmann napping.

Boateng then received his red card from Mike Dean for two challenges within five minutes of each other - neither of which merited a caution.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger then brought on some more of his younger talent for more experience players and David Bentley rewarded him with a stunning fourth.

The England youth star picked up the ball on the edge of the area before spotting Schwarzer off his line and he chipped his effort over the Aussie and into the corner - a wonderful way to open your senior account.

Boro will now have to dust themselves down for the fourth game in their four-match series with Arsenal when they hope to secure a place in the Carling Cup final on Wednesday.

The Gunners, who have now won 14 consecutive games in the FA Cup, are likely to field their second-string at The Riverside - knowing that their first team has brushed Boro aside with ease twice in the last fortnight.
