Davala signs Werder deal

By Thomas Zeh
Werder Bremen have finally handed Turkish international Umit Davala a permanent contract which ties the defender to the Weserstadion until 2006 with an option for an additional year.

The 30-year-old defender settled in well since joining Werder on loan from Serie A giants Internazionale last summer and played an important part in Bremen's surprising rise to the top of Die Bundesliga before the winter break.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf has been keen to make Davala's stay permanent, but negotiations with Inter about releasing the former Galatasaray ace from his contract lasted until the weekend.

"I am happy that the negotiations led to a good result in the end and I am now able to focus fully on the upcoming duties with Werder," Davala told the club's website.
