Opta Jury verdict: Joe Cole

It was such a close one that the very last vote decided the verdict for Joe Cole - with planetfootball readers voting the youngster a miss by the narrowest of margins.

Most of you recognised Cole's talent, but many felt that he had failed to shine after leaving West Ham for Chelsea.

An unprecedented number of you felt that the Jury was still out - with 21 percent of those voting believing the player deserves more time to prove his worth.

39% percent of you think that the player is a hit - and will prove that flair and potential can translate into one of the best midfielders around given time.

However, with the very last vote cast Cole was voted a miss, with around 40% deciding that Cole has not proved the success he did whilst battling for prior club West Ham.

Here are some of the best comments made on the subject:

Jamie Jardine: 'Miss' - as a West Ham fan, he should've (like the others) spent a season in the Nationwide after all he was part of the reason why the 'Irons' got relegated. For £6.6m, Chelsea have got a very good deal but since then he's spent a lot of the time on the bench and has also been linked with moves to Spartak Moscow, Charlton & there were even suggestions he may come back to West Ham on loan. Joe has complained a lot about spending a lot of the time on the bench. If he wants to play regular first-team football, I'm sure there'll be a place for him in the team just down the road at London E13

Adam Canay I am a life long Liverpool fan, and was gutted when finding out that Joe Cole moved to Chelsea for a measly £6 million. I thought Liverpool would have jumped at the chance of buying Joe Cole for that price and Joe Cole would probably walk into the Liverpool side. At Chelsea there is far too much competition for a midfield place, and therefore I think it would be hard to judge Cole on his progress at Chelsea. Cole has the chance to be something big for club and country, but whilst at Chelsea, he is limiting his chances of become something really big, especially for England. I think Joe Cole can be hit, but Joe please, please, please, come to Anfield and that's were he will succeed!

Roddy Cons The jury is still out. I think in some ways Joe Cole made a mistake in signing for Chelsea as although he may have seen it as a chance to be play Champions League football and test himself, at his age he needs to be playing regular first team football and he should be, especially with the amount of talent he has. At almost any other Premiership team he would be playing regularly, but Chelsea's policy of signing any midfielder they can has restricted Cole's chances to play and makes it hard to say whether he is a hit or a miss.
