Heald calls it a day

Wimbledon goalkeeper Paul Heald has been forced to retire from football with a serious knee injury.

The 35-year-old had signed a new one-year contract with The Dons last August before suffering his knee injury in a 3-1 defeat at Rotherham United back in early November.

The keeper has been unable to recover from the setback and forced to hang up his gloves after more than 16 years as a professional, but he will stay on with the Milton Keynes-based outfit as their goalkeeping coach.

"Paul has had to retire. He won't be coming back from his injury," said Wimbledon boss Stuart Murdoch.

"He has a very bad knee. He had an operation on it but the main thing for him is to get through the rest of his life without any pain.

"He will still continue in his role as goalkeeping coach."
