Real Sociedad 0 Lyon 1

Lyon claimed a deserved 1-0 victory in Spain as Gabriel Schurrer's own goal condemned Real Sociedad to a first leg defeat in the UEFA Champions League.

Schurrer turned Florent Malouda's cross in to his own net on 18 minutes while Sander Westerveld was the busier of the two goalkeepers as he kept Lyon at bay.

The French champions were content to soak up any Sociedad pressure in the first half as Schurrer flicked a shot wide of the target and Xabi Alonso's low effort was saved by Gregory Coupet.

Lyon's pace and trickery on the counter attack were causing Sociedad no end of problems and it was from this source that the visitors took the lead on 18 minutes.

Florent Malouda twisted and turned on the corner of the box before finding a glimmer of space to deliver a low ball to the near post which Schurrer turned beyond his helpless keeper Sander Westerveld.

The hosts continued to be the team more committed to attack and Nihat Kahveci almost brought Sociedad level on 20 minutes but his shot was smartly pushed away by Coupet.

The best chances, with Sociedad wasteful in their shooting, started to fall Lyon's way as their counter attacking play became more and more potent with Pegguy Luyindula's low effort gathered up by Westerveld.

The Dutch shot-stopper then had to be alert to keep out Mickael Essien's cleverly hit shot from Luyindula's lay-off as the visitors looked the more likely to score again.

After the break, Sociedad immediately hunted for goals as Valeri Karpin's low cross to the near post was blocked by Edmilson after Darko Kovacevic got a faint touch to the ball.

But it remained Westerveld who had to work the harder of the two keepers as he pushed over Juninho's free kick which was arcing towards the top corner.

The Brazilian midfielder then spurned a great chance to extend the advantage on the hour mark after running on to Luyindula's pass but, disappointingly, he drilled his shot over.

Socieded largely flattered to deceive in their bid to claim an equaliser and Westerveld again had to be on his toes to keep out substitute Vikash Dhorasoo's shot.

The closest the home side came to a goal of their own was seven minutes from time when Russian midfielder Karpin lashed a vicious free kick off the underside of the bar with Coupet a stranded spectator.

Lyon almost poached a deserved second goal in the final minutes when Malouda showed great control and dinked a shot beyond Westerveld but the post proved to be Sociedad's saviour.
