Kahn: Real blunder has changed me

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has admitted that the mistake he made against Real Madrid last week has 'opened his eyes'.

Kahn has often been a hugely outspoken and controversial figure at the Bavarian outfit, and has never been slow in publicly criticising both team-mates and other club figures in the past.

His behaviour has seen him cut something of an isolated figure at times, a role he seemed happy to accept.

However, following his blunder against Real when he allowed a Roberto Carlos free-kick to somehow squirm under his body from long-range, the 34-year-old conceded that he had been too introverted a character, and was now hoping to become more of a team player.

"The error against Real Madrid opened my eyes with regards to getting closer to the team," Kahn told Bild.

"As a goalkeeper, you are too concentrated on yourself. Perhaps I have been a bit too extreme."

The German international also revealed how a supportive banner held up by a young Bayern fan during last weekend's league victory against Wolfsburg had helped him come to terms with his gaffe against Real.

The message read 'Olli, Real is forgotten', and Kahn took special effort to ensure the boy received his gloves at the end of the game as an appreciative gesture.

"At the end of the first half, when I was going to the dressing room, I saw the boy with the banner.

"These are the moments in the life of a sportsman that move you a lot.

"I couldn't stop thinking how much effort the lad had taken to make the banner with his own pens."

Kahn's Bayern Munich face Real at the Santiago Bernabeu next Wednesday in the return leg of their UEFA Champions League tie with the score balanced at 1-1.
