Chelsea confirm Robben talks

Chelsea have confirmed that they are in talks with PSV Eindhoven starlet Arjen Robben over a move to Stamford Bridge with the Dutch international currently undergoing a medical.

Reports claim that both clubs, who are working on a relationship between both clubs, have agreed a deal worth in the region of ‚é¼20 million for the exciting winger, with Robben set to pen a five-year contract with The Blues.

PSV Eindhoven had claimed they have agreed a deal with the big-spending Chelsea which will see Robben arrive at Stamford Bridge next summer and now Chelsea have confirmed talks are underway.

"Chelsea can confirm that we are in negotiations with PSV Eindhoven for the purchase of their 20-year-old international striker Arjen Robben and that he is undergoing a medical with a view to signing," read a statement on the club's official website.

The 19-year-old is quoted on Dutch teletext as saying that the move to Chelsea will help develop him as a player.

"I think that I can become a better player at Chelsea and that I can develop myself into a top European player," said Robben.

PSV are resigned to losing their most prized asset and it appears that they are close to sealing a deal with Chelsea.

PSV spokesman Pedro Salazar Hewitt said he could not confirm a deal was done, but admitted talks were well advanced between both parties

"We never discuss financial terms, but talks are in a concluding phase," said Hewitt.

Manchester United were thought to be in pole position for Robben after inviting the player over for a tour of Old Trafford and having talks with the player at the start of the year.

Chelsea have now sabotaged the move and are believed to have struck a deal with the former Groningen ace from under the noses of United.

Should Robben join Chelsea it would come come as a major blow to United as they had made Robben one of their top summer transfer targets.
