Three goals in seven second half minutes from Craig Bellamy, Alan Shearer and Laurent Robert, along with a late Titus Bramble volley was enough to give Newcastle a comfortable lead in their fourth round tie with the Spaniards.

Mallorca will wonder how things fell apart after Fernando Correa had given the visitors the lead following the break.

On a cool evening at St James' Park, the Newcastle crowd saw a slow start from the home side, as Mallorca looked dangerous early on.

Samuel Eto'o missed a great opportunity to put his side in the lead after shooting over Shay Given's bar from Gonzalo Colsa's flick after Nene's low corner was sent in from the left.

The African hit-man was causing plenty of problems to the Newcastle backline, as Mallorca's neat passing football saw them gain control of the match in the early stages.

The Magpies started to come into the match but Luis Aragones's side remained firm at the back, allowing few Newcastle opportunities to develop and leaving the home side constantly frustrated.

Newcastle's best chance of the half came just before the break as Robert drilled a free kick past the Mallorca wall but wide of goalkeeper Leo Franco's left post.

Sir Bobby Robson's half time team tlak must have inspired the Newcastle players and they started the brightest, with plenty of attacking endeavour from the re-start.

Leo Franco was soon tested after Shearer fed Robert before feeding Bellamy and the Welsh international shot low and hard from a tough angle but the Mallorca keeper saved well.

Then on 58 minutes, Mallorca went down the other end to take the lead on the break, as Gary Speed's wayward pass went to Eto'o, who played a one-two with Alejandro Campano before running into the box and striking the bar with a powerful effort.

The rebound dropped for Correa, who was left unmarked in front of goal, and he reacted to head the ball into the open net for 1-0.

However, Newcastle's resolve was not broken and Bellamy brought them level after Bramble's long ball forward saw a mix-up between Mallorca defenders Federico Lussenhoff and Fernando Nino and their wayward play allowed the Welshman in and he finished low past Leo Franco for 1-1.

The Magpies were inspired at this stage and it did not take long for them to take the lead as Robert's corner from the right side found Shearer at the near post to make it 2-1 to the home side.

Robson's side seemed revitalised by the two goals scored and it was Robert that would make it 3-1 with a straight-on free kick from distance that beat Mallorca's three-man wall and a diving Leo Franco to make it three goals in the space of seven minutes.

With minutes remaining, Mallorca's depressing evening got worse when Eduardo Moya was sent off for a second bookable offence after making a late challenge on Shearer.

That set up a free kick on the right that Robert hit over and Bramble rose well to volley home a right foot strike and seal an emphatic victory for the Toon.

The 4-1 lead should enough to give Newcastle enough of a cushion for passage to the quarter finals, despite facing a second leg match at Son Moix in a fortnight's time.

There was one injury concern for Newcastle, as Kieron Dyer was forced to come off just before the end after favouring his troubled hamstring again.
