Werder promise Lubeck respect

Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf has urged his players not to underestimate the threat of Bundesliga Zwei club VfB Lubeck, as the two sides prepare to meet in Tuesday's German Cup semi-final.

Although Lubeck are languishing at the wrong end of their table and Werder lead the Bundesliga, Schaaf still believes that Tuesday's opposition will provide a credible challenge to Bremen's bid for a historic domestic double.

''They have nothing to lose because the pressure is not on them,'' Schaaf said. ''They can forget about their relegation worries and are keen to gain self-confidence from the match.''

Lubeck are expected to take 10,000 fans to the Weststadion and coach Dieter Hecking admits that both he and his players are dreaming of causing a cup upset.

''We have to stop Werder having fun on the pitch and it suits us well that we don't have to run the match because we are stronger away from home,'' confirmed Hecking.

''This is the biggest game in the history of our club and all my players dream about a sensation.''

However, Lubeck's chances of progession have been handed a blow with the news that two key players, Martin Groh and Jens Scharping, are both to miss out suffering with heavy flu.

Bremen are without influential Turkish international Umit Davala, whose place will go to Canadian left-back Paul Stalteri.
