Cobblers sign ex-U's boss

Northampton Town have signed former Cambridge United manager John Taylor to non-contract terms as a striker.

Taylor was sacked as U's boss last week and he appeared in the reserves for The Cobblers this week.

He made some appearances as a striker this term with Cambridge and Northampton boss Colin Calderwood was delighted to land a marksman of Taylor's experience.

"John brings terrific experience that we hope will be invaluable in the next few weeks," Calderwood told the club's official website.

"We also hope that he will be a terrific teacher for Marc Richards, Steve Morison, Derek Asamoah and Eric Sabin.

"I'm sure they can all learn from John. He is a great character and someone I have known for a long time.

"He wants to come and play football and he comes with a freshness and I'm sure he will batter a few heads up front and give us a lift."

The Cobblers have also snapped up young midfielder Ryan Amoo on a 15-month contract from Premiership side Aston Villa.

The 20-year-old has been a regular in Villa's reserves this season and will provide further depth to Calderwood's squad.
