O'Neill's keeper contract delight

Martin O'Neill has expressed delight at young keeper David Marshall signing a new deal with Celtic, saying the teenager has all the attributes to become a Parkhead great.

The 19-year-old has had a superb week, having kept Barcelona at bay in the Uefa Cup on Thursday and promptly signing a four-year contract on Friday.

O'Neill has revealed the deal was agreed before Marshall's Camp Nou super-show, but he has no doubts about the youngster making the grade at Celtic.

"We've signed David for the next four years," said O'Neill. "It was always on the cards but it was highlighted by his performance. We thought we might as well get it done.

"We are very pleased. We had agreed the deal beforehand and certainly there wasn't a change of terms after Thursday night!

"He wants to play and feels he has a future here. A performance like Thursday's would suggest that he has.

"David has got great potential. He has all the attributes.

"If he was playing at a lesser club than this, where results every week are not going to make or break you, he would have been playing in someone's first team even at the tender age he is.

"He got the opportunity on Thursday and it would be too easy for me to say I expected him to play like that. I don't think anybody thought he would produce a performance of such class."

Celtic face city rivals Rangers on Sunday and O'Neill is ready to let Marshall take his chance, despite Rab Douglas being available again following his suspension.

"Sunday is not as big a dilemma as you think," added O'Neill. "Rab Douglas has played umpteen games through a pain barrier and is still uncomfortable, so it might be a chance for him to get himself right.

"He wants to play but he is just not feeling great up around the hip, so we think rest will do the trick."

Marshall has revealed he had no hesitation in signing the deal.

"My contract was agreed before we went to Barcelona so it was just a case of when we got a bit of time it would be signed," said the keeper.

"I was glad when they told me to come and sign it. I'm a local boy and it means a great deal to me."
