Henchoz fears for Reds future

Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz has admitted he fears for his future at Anfield after losing his place in the side.

The Swiss international has struggled to hold down a regular place in the side this season due to injury and a slump in form.

Henchoz, who has just over a year to run on his current deal, is hoping to win a new contract at Anfield, but he admitted he is not sure about his future.

The 29-year-old has seen Igor Biscan replace him as Sami Hyypia's central defensive partner and he is perplexed as to why he has been left out of the side in recent weeks.

"Inevitably, I am asking myself questions. Even if it's for the good of the team, I still don't understand why I have been left out," Henchoz told Swiss daily Le Matin.

"I'm not used to sitting on the bench. The Liverpool fans don't understand it, either.

"I have not spoken to the manager about it. Gerard Houllier has not spoken to me and I'm not the kind of person to go looking to speak to him.

"There are many question marks about the future. Everyone is asking about what will happen, not just me.

"The manager's future is uncertain and the club will lose a lot of money if we don't qualify for the Champions' League for the second consecutive season. We have eight matches left and it's imperative we finish fourth."

Henchoz revealed that despite having reservations about playing for Switzerland on some occasions he was glad to be involved in Wednesday's friendly with Greece so as to get some action.

"Since I've not been playing I'm grateful to get on the pitch for Switzerland," added Henchoz.

"When I was playing for Liverpool I looked at international friendly matches with apprehension. Now, I'm grateful for them."

German side Stuttgart tried to sign the former Blackburn ace during the January transfer window and Henchoz's comments could see them rekindle their interest.
