Savage denies United jibe

Birmingham City midfielder Robbie Savage has denied calling a number of Manchester United players 'no better than average' by stating he was misquoted.

The Welsh midfielder, who was brought up with a number of the current Red Devils' stars after coming through their youth team, is contemplating a media ban.

Savage is unhappy his quotes were taken out of context and believes the reigning Premiership champions are still one of the best sides in the world.

"I was misquoted," explained Savage. "They are a quality team - one of best in the world.

"The best thing I can do is not talk to the press any more."

Blues boss Steve Bruce believes Savage will learn from his mistake and will be a stronger player in the future.

The former Manchester United defender, who saw his side lose a lead at St Andrews against United on Saturday, was contemplating taking Savage off at the break.

"I think Savage has been let down by the press and a so-called journalist who thinks he is his mate," explained Bruce. "They all ring him when they do a story.

"It was in the 4-4-2 magazine and they ran it and have done him like a kipper, but he'll learn from that. He played well today.

"Maybe I should have substituted him though, as had an ankle injury at half time."
