Roberto Carlos keeping it real
The Brazilian full back is one of the most high profile defenders on the planet - bringing inevitable links to Chelsea, who have the spending power of benefactor Roman Abramovich.
However, Roberto Carlos insists that talk is cheap, and that he would love to remain in Spain for the remainder of his career.
"I can not sign anything with another club if I still have a year left on my contract with Real," said the Brazilian.
"It's absurd and would show an enormous lack of respect by me. Everybody knows I want to stay and I have held fresh talks with the club.
"I'm sure I'll stay here for a long time. Until 2009 or 2010, why not?"
Club supremo Jorge Valdano is a big fan of Roberto Carlos and confirmed that the summer would bring a new deal for the player.
"At the end of this season or the beginning of the next one we will reach an agreement with Roberto Carlos for signing a new deal," said Valdano.
"In addition, Roberto Carlos has already told us he would like to end his career with the club.
"Once he has resolved some personal problems everything will be resolved. Roberto Carlos will stay in Madrid."
