Keane recalled to Ireland squad

Manchester United star Roy Keane, as expected, has been recalled to the Republic of Ireland squad for next week's friendly with Poland.

Keane has not played for Ireland since quitting the national team after rowing with former coach Mick McCarthy prior to the 2002 World Cup.

The Cork man announced his return to the international scene last week after holding talks with manager Brian Kerr over a comeback.

Despite Keane's return Birmingham defender Kenny Cunningham will retain the captaincy of the team having taken the armband after the 2002 World Cup.

Hibs goalkeeper Nick Colgan, Newcastle defender Andy O'Brien and West Ham hit-man David Connolly are all included having been forced out of the last squad.

Manchester United's John O'Shea and Sunderland duo Jason McAteer and Gary Breen are recalled having been rested for last month's win over Czech Republic due to club commitments.

Tottenham defender Stephen Carr has been forced to withdraw from the squad with a back problem.

Kerr revealed it was Keane that initiated the comeback to the squad and he does not expect any problems between his squad and Keane following his walkout prior to the World Cup

"It is my policy to have the best available team lining up for Ireland.

"It was Roy Keane who made the approach and it was up to him to sort out his problems with Manchester United.

"I did not speak to Sir Alex. It was Roy who took the initiative and I am delighted that he is again available for his country even though I know that many fans will not be happy with this decision.

"I was not involved in any way in the events that took place prior to those World Cup finals.

"But I feel it is time to move on and for all of us to be mature regarding Roy's return, although I can understand why some fans are annoyed.

"But the captaincy remains with Kenny Cunningham who has always done a very good job for me. Roy Keane will be treated just the same as any of the other players.

"I have spoken to some of the squad about his return and I do not envisage any problems.

"We all know we have to move on with the focus on the World Cup qualifying campaign."
