Figo: Judge us after tournament

Portugal international Luis Figo has told the nation's supporters to judge coach Luiz Felipe Scolari after the Euro 2004 tournament.

The hosts have been in poor form in several international friendlies played in a warm-up to the finals this summer.

Brazilian coach Scolari has been in charge since early last year but has come under fire for the poor displays of his side in recent friendly matches.

After being booed off by home fans after a 2-1 defeat by Italy, Scolari will be without five Porto players for their next match with Sweden on Wednesday as they prepare for their UEFA Champions League semi-final.

Real Madrid star Figo has urged fans not to be too rough on Scolari, and judge the coach and his team on their performance during Euro 2004.

"The last match wasn't easy for the coach because everyone wants good results," said Figo.

"People should wait until the end of the tournament to analyse the results under Scolari.

"The results before a tournament don't matter, as the World Cup showed.

"Obviously we would like to play well and win but it's better to get the poor results and the errors out of the way first."

Portugal face neighbours Spain, along with Russia and Greece in Group A of the tournament, and will once more be under pressure to perform.

Along with the usual weight of expectation, Portugal will have to live with the home crowd desperate for success, but Figo is hoping that they can finally deliver on their potential.
