Chelsea close on Kompany

EXCLUSIVE
Anderlecht have confirmed to skysports.com that they have held talks with Chelsea over the future transfer of their outstanding young defender Vincent Kompany.

Kompany has a long-term deal at Anderlecht which was just extended when he turned 18 earlier this year - but now he looks bound for England.

A delegation from Chelsea met with Anderlecht's management last month to open talks over Kompany's future.

The meeting is believed to have gone well for Chelsea, although they were told that Kompany would not be allowed to leave The Constant Vanden Stock Stadion until next summer at the very earliest.

Chelsea, though, were seemingly very happy just to secure first option on the Belgian starlet - which they now appear to have done so.

"There was a meeting between Chelsea's representatives and the board of Anderlecht last month," explained Les Mauves' assistant general manager Robert de Pot to skysports.com.

"It was a meeting to discuss the transfer of the player [Kompany].

"We told them that we intended to keep Kompany for next season, and they agreed with this.

"We will be talking to them again in the next few weeks."

Kompany has long been linked with a move to Manchester United and Bayern Munich, but Chelsea have emerged in recent months as the most likely to win the race for his signature.

One crucial factor in the move is believed to be that fact that his good friend Yves Makaba Makalamby is already at Stamford Bridge.

The young goalkeeper moved to Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven last year and he is know to have told Kompany about the benefits of joining him in West London.

Kompany and Makalamby also have the same agent in the shape of Jacques Liechtenstein.

Although he would only confirm to skysports.com that his client would be playing for Anderlecht next season.

"Vincent will be playing for Anderlecht next season, that is for sure," he said.

"After that we will have to see."

Kompany is also keen to finish off his education in Belgium before leaving, which seems to suit the plans both Anderlecht and Chelsea have for him.

"I will first finish off my studies," said Kompany earlier this week.

"Sometimes, I feel much more tired than other players, because I have to combine it with school."

Chelsea are likely to sign a number of high-profile players during the summer, but their future defence looks to be taking shape with the signings of Kompany and young Brazilian Alex already sealed.
