Drogba named France's best

Marseille star Didier Drogba has been voted French Player of the Year.

The brilliant striker missed out on being named Africa's top man last week, but he has now won Le Championnat's top award.

The 26-year-old narrowly beat Monaco's playmaker Ludovic Giuly to the gong, thanks to his 19 goals in 32 games.

The Ivory Coast star also took goal of the season for his strike against Montpellier.

"To get two trophies is enormous," said a delighted Drogba.

"I thought I had a chance for the best goal, but the best player is really flattering.

"Of course I share those individual rewards with my team-mates, without them, I could not score so many goals.

"Actually, I voted for Ludovic Giuly who is having a beautiful season with Monaco, and it is not over."

Monaco's Didier Deschamps took the coach award, while his charge Patrice Evra took the Young Player of the Year prize.

Lyon's French international shot-stopper Gregory Coupet lifted the Goalkeeper of the Year trophy.
