Nottingham Forest 1 Wigan 0

Nottingham Forest inflicted a huge dent on Wigan's play-off hopes with a tight 1-0 against their visitors to The City Ground.

A scrappy goal from David Johnson was enough to decide a tight game, and leave Wigan needing a result in their final game against West Ham to get into the top six and the chance of playing in The Premiership next season.

With Jason Roberts suspended for the game Wigan had started with Lee McCulloch - but it was prolific Nathan Ellington that had their best early chance, his effort pulling a fine save from Paul Gerrard in the Forest goal.

Forest looked lacking in ideas up front, although much of their better play came through Andy Reid.

Johnson's goal came on 58, when the former Burnley loan-star deflected a goal-bound Paul Evans shot past John Filan to the delight of the home fans.

Gerrard was substituted in the second half and replacement Barry Roche was delighted to see Ellington's drive strike the upright as Wigan searched in vain for an equaliser.
