Hughes pleads for Pompey peace

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is set to meet with chairman Milan Mandaric on Thursday - with Pompey midfielder Richard Hughes leading the pleads of the players for the popular boss to remain at Fratton Park.

Mandaric has threatened an overhaul of Redknapp's coaching staff in the summer, with Jim Smith and Kevin Bond likely to leave the club, in a move which has enraged the former West Ham chief.

Redknapp has been left fuming by Mandaric's interference, having exceeded expectations this season by guiding Portsmouth to Premiership safety.

Hughes, clearly in allegiance with his manager, has urged Redknapp and Mandaric to settle their differences.

''The players know as little about what is going on as anyone else but I think I speak for everyone when I say I do not want Harry or Jim to go,'' said Hughes.

''The situation needs to be cleared up as quickly as possible and I am sure it will be because now we have survived our first season in the Premiership we need to push on and take the next step.''
