Serie A Round-Up

A thrilling final day in Serie A saw Perugia clinch the play-off spot at the bottom and the chance to remain in the top flight and Internazionale just cling onto the fourth Champions League spot.

Much of the media attention was focused on Milan, where Roberto Baggio played his final game before retiring.

Baggio did not get on the scoresheet as champions Milan ran up a 4-2 win in a party atmosphere, but did set up Francesco Matuzelem's second.

Jon Dahl Tomasson scored a brace for the Rossoneri with Rui Costa also on the scoresheet - but the most crucial goal came from Andrei Shevchenko, who clinched the capocannonieri as top scorer.

The Ukrainian's goal made it a bitter day for Parma whose young striker Alberto Gilardino finished runner up despite a wonderful last push.

Gilardino scored four times for the Gialloblu as they beat Udinese 4-3 in a thriller, but Internazionale's 3-2 victory over Empoli meant the Nerazzurri clung onto the fourth spot.

Udinese pushed Parma all the way with Per Kroldrup, Martin Jorgensen and Martin Jankulovski all scoring despite the defeat.

For Inter, without the suspended Christian Vieri, a win was vital - but they were made to sweat, going behind to a Stefano Lucchini goal.

A brace from Adriano sandwiching a strike from Alvaro Recoba steadied the ship, but the final stages were rendered all the more tense when Tommasso Rocchi grabbed one back for relegated Empoli.

Perugia looked odds on for relegation at the midway point of the season, but they have turned things round and could now survive - if they can win a play-off game against a Serie B side.

A 1-0 victory was enough for Perugia - with English striker Jay Bothroyd bagging the crucial goal.

This meant that Empoli and Modena bowed out of the top-flight, joining Ancona in the bottom three.

Modena finished with defeat to Lazio - who had a mathematical shot at fourth spot before results went against them.

The Roman side have been impressive this season and they won on the final day courtesy of goals from Beranardo Corradi and Cesar, with a Nicola Amoruso earning Modena a consolation from the penalty spot late on.

Roma and Sampdoria played out a 0-0 draw that ensured Udinese would finish seventh and play in the Uefa Cup next year.

Marcello Lippi's last game as Juventus coach was victorious with Igor Tudor, Fabrizio Miccoli and Marco Di Vaio all on the scoresheet in a 3-1 victory over Siena, with Tore Andre Flo grabbing a consolation.

Chievo ended a mediocre season with a 2-1 win against Bologna. Fabio Pecchia opened the scoring for Bologna, but strikes from Carvalho and Andrea Zanchetta earned the Verona club allthree points.

Finally, Serie A's youngest side Lecce signed out with a win against Reggina - Javier Chevanton and Daniele Franceschini scoring for Lecce, with Stefano Dall'Aqua on the scoresheet for Reggina.
