Stam set for Milan

Lazio's Dutch defender Jaap Stam will sign for Italian champions Milan on Monday, according to the club's vice president Adriano Galliani.

Rossoneri chief Galliani says that the former Manchester United stopper will officially pen a deal at San Siro on Monday.

"Stam will sign for Milan tomorrow," Galliani told Italy's Sky Sports.

"On Monday it will be official."

Stam has confirmed that he wanted to leave Stadio Olimpico and Lazio have to sell him as he has just one year left on his current contract.

Milan have long been mooted as his possible destination and Galliani has now confirmed that they intend to sign the powerful defender to boost their squad.

Should he complete the move, Stam will join former Lazio team-mate Alessandro Nesta at Milan - who also have Paolo Maldini and Cafu in an impressive looking back line.

Milan have recently signed Lyon playmaker Vikash Dhorasoo, and that is in keeping with the plan put forward by president Silvio Berlusconi.

"We want to be a main protagonist in Italy and in Europe," said Italian prime minister Berlusconi after Milan celebrated their title win on Sunday.

"It's in Milan's philosophy to be a winner and to go on the attack.

"We are happy for this Scudetto and we hope to repeat it. Unfortunately we have lost a few aims to which we can hope to achieve next year.

"This is a group with a lot of class that can be a major protagonist next year too.

"There will surely arrive a midfielder and a defender. I'm sorry to lose Redondo."

Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo has also said he would like to join Milan should he be sold by Chelsea, but he would cost a huge amount.
