Latics land Frandsen

Wigan Athletic have wrapped up the signing of Per Frandsen on a free transfer following the Dane's departure from Bolton Wanderers.

Trotters boss Sam Allardyce decided against offering the veteran midfielder a contract extension, following two spells of distinguished service with the club.

Fellow North West side Wigan immediately registered their interest in the 34-year-old while Division One champions Norwich City were also linked with a bid.

Frandsen had admitted he would also be amenable to a return to his homeland but has concurred on a one-year contract to move to The JJB Stadium.

Latics boss Paul Jewell was overjoyed to capture Frandsen, particularly as he was surprised that the experienced Dane had been offloaded by Bolton.

"I'm delighted to have agreed a deal with Per as he has proven quality and will be a great addition to our squad," Jewell told the club's official website.

"I've always rated him highly and was therefore a little bit surprised when Bolton decided to release him.

"I think Sam just felt that it was time to move on and we're very pleased that Per has decided to come here.

"Once we spoke to Per it was fairly easy to convince him to come here as he lives in the area already and has also seen us play a few times and been impressed."
