Bhoys linked with Berbatov

Celtic are believed to be keen on signing Bayer Leverkusen striker Dimitar Berbatov as they search for a replacement for Henrik Larsson.

Larsson has left Celtic after seeing out his contract and Bhoys boss Martin O'Neill is scouring Europe for someone to fill the void left by his departure.

Berbatov, who is currently preparing for Euro 2004 with Bulgaria, enjoyed a fine season for club and country last season scoring a number of goals as Bulgaria reached the finals in Portugal and Bayer qualified for next season's UEFA Champions League.

Bayer Leverkusen general manager Ilja Kaenzik claims that Celtic along with Barcelona and Internazionale are tracking Berbatov, but that the club are keen to keep hold of him.

"I know for a fact Celtic are looking at him, but Barcelona and Inter Milan are also hot on Dimitar, though they say it is too early to sign him," said Kaenzik.

"That will give Celtic a chance but we have just secured Dimitar on a new four-year extended contract. He will not go cheaply."

Kaenzik added that the club will wait until after Euro 2004 before making a decision on his future although they are likely to want a massive fee for the striker if they let him go.

"We want to wait until after Euro 2004 to see if he explodes on to the competition the way he has done in the Bundesliga," added Kaenzik.
