Rufus calls it quits
A serious knee injury has plagued the defender for over a year and he underwent major reconstructive surgery in America in a bid to revive his fortunes.
However, the operation failed to have the desired effect and Rufus has been forced to admit defeat after breaking down in training.
"It is going to take me a long time to come to terms with the fact I will not play for Charlton again," a despondent Rufus told the club's website. "I have worked so hard to recover from this injury but clearly it wasn't to be.
"I would like to thank everyone at the club for their support and particularly the supporters, who have always been right behind me from the time I first broke into the first team.
"I have so many great memories and the play-off final in 1998 is a day I will never forget."
Addicks chief Alan Curbishley has admitted it will be tough to replace a player of Rufus' stature.
"Losing a player of Richard's ability is a massive blow both for the club and the player," said Curbishley.
"He has been one of the key factors in the success we have enjoyed over recent years, and always trained as hard as he played.
"He was a model professional and a credit to the club. He will be sorely missed.
"In my opinion, Richard is the best player in recent seasons not to gain an England cap."
