Donovan set for Bayer return

Bayer Leverkusen have announced they will recall U.S. international striker Landon Donovan at the end of the current Major League Soccer season.

Although he won't be able to play at the BayArena until January 1, 2005, Donovan's time with MLS will end in the fourth year of the co-sharing agreement that was signed between the U.S. top flight league and the Bundesliga club at the end of the 2004 season.

Donovan, who is under contract with Bayer until 2008, has always noted his wish to stay in the US - where he has become a star name in his native California.

However, it now appears - although MLS is yet to comment on the news - that Bayer have chosen to bring the American striker back to Germany rather than selling their hold on the international to MLS.

"I look forward to my return and the challenge with Bayer Leverkusen," said Donovan on the official statement by Bayer.

The implications for the Earthquakes are interesting, as the club continues to be dogged by suggestions they could be moved to another city.

San Jose have failed to improve their average attendance in line with the rest of the League, despite having Donovan on their side and the success of two MLS championships in the last three years.

Donovan himself nearly made his debut in the English Premiership, as Portsmouth attempted to take the American hit-man on loan.

However, that move fell through due to FIFA regulations.
