Queiroz confirms United return

Carlos Queiroz has confirmed he is returning to Manchester United to work under Sir Alex Ferguson again.

The Portuguese boss had an unhappy stint in Spain with Real Madrid but has managed to move back into his old job as Old Trafford number two as Walter Smith was only a temporary appointment by Ferguson.

Even though Tottenham were believed to be interested in acquiring Queiroz, he has opted to accept Ferguson's invitation to head for Manchester.

"I come back with the same functions and responsibilities that I had the first time I was in Manchester," he told O Jogo.

The former South Africa boss was not interested in discussing the possibility of eventually taking over from United's long-standing Scottish manager.

"That is not the important thing," he stressed. "What interests me at the moment is the project and the ideas that we have for the club.

"My mission is to work alongside Alex Ferguson with the intention of making Manchester United the strongest club in the world."

Meanwhile, United are close to sealing the signing of Paris Saint Germain defender Gabriel Heinze.

The Argentina international is understood to have already agreed terms with the FA Cup winners and United have finally upped their offer to around ‚é¼8.5 million, which is around PSG's asking price for the South American.

The French capital outfit are looking to spend the money on Nantes duo Sylvain Armand and Mario Yepes with four-year contracts awaiting the pair at Parc des Princes.
