Berlin bag Basturk

Hertha Berlin have won the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Yildiray Basturk.

The diminutive Turkish international playmaker put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal at the Olympiastadion on Wednesday.

He will join Hertha on a free transfer after seeing out his contract at Leverkusen.

Basturk's future had been the centre of much speculation over the past weeks with Bundesliga champions Werder Bremen, Celtic and Fenerbahce all interested in his signature.

"We are delighted to have added a technically gifted midfielder to our squad," Hertha manager Dieter Hoeness said at Basturk's presentation on Wednesday.

"His speed and dribbling ability paired with Marcelinho will enable us to vary our game considerably."

Another plus for Hertha is without a doubt the hope that Basturk's signing will help mobilise Berlin's large Turkish community to support the club.
