Scholes an injury doubt for England

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has stated key midfielder Paul Scholes is an injury worry ahead of their clash against Switzerland in Euro 2004.

The Manchester United man left the field late on for Owen Hargreaves in The Three Lions' 2-1 defeat to France on Sunday with a twisted ankle.

Scholes will not practice with the team on Tuesday and will undergo an examination on Wednesday to see if he is fit enough to take on Switzerland.

Defender Gary Neville sustained a slight knock against France, but his injury is not as serious as Scholes' and will train on Tuesday.

"Scholes is doubtful," explained Eriksson at a press conference in Lisbon. "He twisted his ankle.

"He will not practice today, maybe tomorrow as well. We'll see on Wednesday if he will play or not. Gary Neville has a small problem, but he should be okay."

The Swede was quick to praise Ledley King's display after he made just his second start against Les Bleus, filling in for John Terry.

However, Chelsea defender Terry is now nearing full fitness, after being forced to miss England's opener, and should return against the Swiss.

"Absolutely fantastic," said Eriksson on King. "I don't remember him making a mistake, he was quick, strong and good in the air.

"Congratulations to him. It's good to have those kind of selection problems. Terry should be ready."

Despite losing to the reigning European Champions, following their injury-time capitulation, Eriksson was delighted with the performance and is hoping for more of the same in their remaining games.

The former Lazio coach is confident England will still qualify from the group phase if they repeat the display that had looked like claiming all three points from France.

"I'll be happy if we can go on playing like we did," he added. "We had a fantastic game, if you take away the last three minutes.

"The players did exactly what we asked them to do."

Eriksson has come under fire to taking off Wayne Rooney, who had shone up front for The Three Lions, for Emile Heskey, but the Swede has no regrets regarding his tactical changes.

"If I could do it again, I'd do it the same way," he continued. "I don't regret them. I think all three did well.

"In last 10 minutes we took over the game. It seems like France ran out of ideas. The last three minutes showed they didn't, but that was my feeling at the end of the game.

"Knowing the mentality (of the players), they are looking forward to Thursday, if they could play today they would."

Despite David Beckham missing a second half spot-kick that would have virtually clinched the game for England, the Real Madrid midfielder is still Eriksson's man to take penalties.

"I haven't thought about that. I think he'd like a take a penalty today, if there was a game today," he added. "If he feels he doesn't want to do it (then that's different)but if he thinks he's the best then he'll do it."
