Vonlanthen: I'm a proud Colombian

The European Championship's youngest scorer, Johann Vonlanthen, has confessed that he does not consider himself Swiss, after being born and bred in Colombia.

Vonlanthen took the record from England's Wayne Rooney when he calmly slotted the ball past Fabien Barthez in France's 3-1 win against the Swiss.

However, in a move that hardly seems calculated to aid his popularity in Switzerland, the PSV Eindhoven starlet admits he has little affinity for his adopted nation.

"I am totally Colombian. I always carry a Colombian flag with me," said the 18-year-old.

"When I was 14 my mother met a Swiss guy and he took us to live with him in Switzerland.

"Colombia have far more talented players than Switzerland. I used to play with them on the beaches of Santa Marta - where Carlos Valderrama is from.

"As it was very difficult for me to have success in Colombian football because of the amount of good players, I went to Switzerland where I started to play and then on to Dutch football.

"I waited for more than a year to be called up for a national Colombian team but as that never happened I accepted an invitation to play for the Swiss Under-21 side.

"In that moment I decided definitively to play for European teams."
