Rooney breaks bone in foot

England striker Wayne Rooney faces a race against time to be fit for the start of the new season after breaking a bone in his foot in their defeat to Portugal.

The Everton man was forced off after 26 minutes of the dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat in Lisbon after picking up a foot injury in a tangle with Portugal defender Jorge Andrade.

Rooney tried to carry on, but was forced to be replaced by Darius Vassell.

It was a horrible way for Euro 2004's joint-top scorer bow out of the tournament.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson revealed that the injury was the same as the one that Three Lions skipper suffered prior to the 2002 World Cup when he broke his metatarsal against Deportivo La Coruna.

"It's the same injury as Beckham before the World Cup, he will be out maybe a month," said Eriksson.

Everton will be sweating over the fitness of Rooney with the new season just 51 days away and he will miss a large chunk of pre-season training.
