Gulls land Villis loan

Torquay United have bolstered their League One squad by taking defender Matthew Villis on a season-long loan from Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle.

The 20-year-old was a regular in the Home Park club's reserve side, with The Pilgrims still eyeing the future by not allowing him to leave permanently to the Plainmoor outfit.

Gulls manager Leroy Rosenior revealed how he tried to land Villis last season.

"I tried to get Matt last year but he was not available," Rosenior told the club's official website.

"The Argyle manager, Bobby Williamson, has been very helpful and I hope the deal works out to our mutual benefit.

"Matt will give us cover in the centre and right back position vacated by Reuben Hazell."

Meanwhile, both Torquay and Plymouth have also agreed compensation terms regarding teenage starlet Clay Bond.

Bond had trials with Premiership side Bolton Wanderers and Southampton while Chelsea were monitoring the progress of the youngster.

He has, however, decided to join The Pilgrims for next season, with The Gulls to benefit from a sell-on fee for Bond, should Plymouth sell the promising talent on in the future.

In other news, Williamson has appointed Gerry McCabe to his backroom staff for next season.

McCabe, who worked with Williamson when the pair were at Scottish side Hibernian, joins John Blackley in being the club's first team coaches for next season.
